What a Good Couple Package Should Include (and What to Question)

Two quotes with the same headline price can hide very different trips. This is the checklist we use when we look at any Vietnam tour package for couple, ours included.

Red flags when you compare quotes

• Hotels with no names. "4-star hotels" without names or locations lets an operator swap in whatever is cheapest on the day.
• A cruise with no cabin type. Ask for the ship's name, the cabin category and roughly how many guests are on board.
• A price far below everyone else's. Something has been cut. It is usually the cruise, the hotel location or the private car.
• Vague sightseeing lines. "City tour" and "sightseeing as per itinerary" often cover shopping stops you did not choose.
• No one to call in Vietnam. Ask who picks up at 10 pm if your driver does not show. It should be a real person on the ground.
• Everything non-refundable. Cruises get cancelled in storms, so ask what happens to your booking when the weather turns.

Best Time to Visit Vietnam as a Couple, and the Route for Each Month

Vietnam is about 1,650 km long, and the weather does not match from one end to the other. While Hanoi is cool and misty in January, Phu Quoc is dry and sunny. While Hoi An is dealing with floods in October, Ha Long Bay is at its clearest. So instead of asking which month is best for Vietnam, ask which route is best for your month.

Weather is a pattern, not a promise. Storms and heat waves shift from year to year, so your planner rechecks the forecast before you fly.

Two things that surprise couples about the seasons

• The bay is not always blue. Winter mist and spring haze both soften the view, which can look moody and lovely but is not the postcard. If clear skies matter most, October and November are the safest bet.
• Summer is not a write-off. From May to August the central coast has some of its best beach weather, and the north costs less. You just plan around the heat and the odd storm.

Ha Long Bay

Limestone islands rising out of green water, best seen from your own balcony at sunrise. One night is the sweet spot. Ask if the route includes Lan Ha Bay, the quieter neighbour.

Romantic Experiences in Vietnam Worth Paying For (and a Few to Skip)

Couple packages love to pad the itinerary with add-ons. Some earn their price and some do not. This is where we would spend, and where we would not.

Worth the money

• A balcony cabin on the Ha Long cruise. It turns the cruise from a boat trip into a private morning: coffee on your own balcony while the bay wakes up.
• A lantern boat in Hoi An. A short ride on the Thu Bon River after dark, usually a few hundred rupees a boat. It is cheap, and it is the image most couples remember.
• A cooking class for two. A half day that often includes a market visit. It gives you something to do together that is not a photo stop.
• A dawn photoshoot. Book one hour at first light in Hoi An or on your cruise deck. Light is soft, streets are empty and the pictures beat any midday attempt.
• Ba Na Hills at opening time. The Golden Bridge is worth seeing, but it is as much a theme park as a viewpoint. Go first thing, before the queues form.
• One private dinner. A table on the sand in Da Nang or Phu Quoc is a fine splurge for one evening. Book it in a dry season, and have a backup plan for rain.

Fine to skip, or keep basic

• Paid room decoration. Many hotels add petals or a cake for honeymooners for little or nothing if you tell them in advance. Ask before you pay for a decoration package.
• A second night on the cruise. It adds cost more than views for most couples. One night covers the sunset and the sunrise.
• City tours with shopping stops. If the itinerary line reads only "city tour", ask exactly where you are going.
• Sapa on a short trip. The terraces are lovely, but the travel time eats a week's worth of holiday. Save it for a longer plan.

The package price is the biggest line, but it is not the whole trip. This is the full cost for two adults sharing a room over five or six days, from the first flight search to the last tip. The land package is roughly 49 percent of the lean total and 42 percent of the comfortable one, so the other lines matter more than people expect. • Book flights 8 to 10 weeks ahead and fly mid-week. Fares climb fast in the last month.
• Avoid the peak fortnights. The same route in mid-January can cost noticeably less than the Christmas to New Year week.
• Keep lunches local. Noodle shops and cafés cost a fraction of hotel restaurants, and the food is usually better.

• The cruise cabin. A balcony on the one night you spend on the water is the upgrade couples mention most afterwards.

Vietnam E-Visa for Indian Couples: Step by Step

Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and the e-visa is the simplest way to get one. You and your partner each apply separately, so have two passports and two sets of files ready. Everything happens online on the government portal, evisa.gov.vn. The fee is USD 25 each, which is about ₹4,800 for the two of you at recent exchange rates.

   Each passport needs to be valid for more than six months from your arrival date and have blank pages. Each of you applies separately.

   You need a scan of the passport photo page, a recent passport-style photo on a plain background, your entry date and the airport where you will land.

   Open evisa.gov.vn, choose the e-visa and fill in each form exactly as the passport reads. Pick the airport you will really land at; Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc are all listed.

   Pay USD 25 per person by card for a single-entry e-visa valid up to 90 days. Multiple entry costs USD 50. The fee is not refunded if an application is rejected, so save the registration code.

   Approval usually comes in about three working days, so allow up to five. Check the status with your registration code, download the PDF and carry two printed copies each.

Three slips that cause delays

• Details that do not match the passport. Spell your name and enter the passport number exactly as printed. Mistakes can lead to a refusal, and the fee is not refunded.
• A photo that fails the check. Use a plain background, a straight face and no glasses. A casual selfie is the most common reason for rework.
• The wrong entry airport or date. Confirm your flights first. Changing the entry airport after approval can mean a fresh application. If your flight lands after midnight, use the local calendar date.

Flights, Food and Getting Around Vietnam as a Couple

Flights from India

Recent schedules list nonstop flights to Vietnam from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Kochi, flown by IndiGo, Air India, Vietnam Airlines and VietJet. Delhi to Hanoi takes about 4.5 hours, and Kolkata to Hanoi under 3. Schedules change with the season, so confirm your route before you fix dates. Where your city has no nonstop flight, a stop in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore usually brings the total to 7 to 9 hours.

• Ask for an open-jaw ticket. On a Hanoi to Hoi An route, land in Hanoi and fly home from Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, so you never backtrack north.
• Add bags when you book. Budget domestic fares often exclude checked baggage, and adding it later costs more, especially if you are bringing tailored clothes home.
• Keep the Ha Long day light. Your cruise ends around midday and the drive back takes hours, so book the onward flight for the evening.

Vegetarian and Jain food

Vietnam is easier for vegetarians than its reputation suggests. Look for the word chay on menus, which means vegetarian, and try pho chay, fresh spring rolls and banh mi chay. Indian restaurants operate in Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. Cruises and resorts can prepare vegetarian or Jain meals with advance notice, so say so at booking, not on board. Fish sauce hides in many dishes that look vegetarian, so it is worth confirming with your guide.

Money and phone

• Carry US dollars and a card. Indian rupees are hard to exchange in Vietnam, and UPI works at very few places, so do not rely on it. Take crisp USD notes to change, and use a forex card in cities. Markets and small cafés prefer cash.
• The numbers look big. Vietnamese dong prices run into the tens and hundreds of thousands. A note of 100,000 VND is worth a few hundred rupees, so check the zeros before you pay.
• Get data on landing. An eSIM or an airport tourist SIM costs a few hundred rupees and makes maps and the Grab app work from the first hour.

Getting around

Your package covers a private car between cities and to the sights. For free evenings, the Grab app books cars and bikes at fair, fixed prices, which avoids arguments with unofficial taxis. Crossing a Hanoi street feels alarming at first. Walk slowly and steadily, and the scooters flow around you. Do not rent a scooter yourselves unless you hold a valid licence and insurance that covers it.

Small things that separate a good trip from a memorable one:

• Say it is your honeymoon when you book. Hotels and cruises often add a small gesture or a better room if they know in advance. It is never guaranteed, but it is free to ask.
• Confirm the bed type in writing. Many Vietnamese hotels default to twin beds. Ask for a double at booking, and check it again with the hotel a week before you fly.
