Why Delhi Travellers Are Booking Vietnam Instead of the Usual Suspects

Ask ten people in Delhi where they would take a first international holiday and you will hear Dubai, Bangkok and Singapore. Vietnam used to lose that contest for one dull reason: getting there meant a connection. That excuse has mostly gone. IndiGo, VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines fly nonstop from Indira Gandhi International to Hanoi, Air India and Vietnam Airlines fly nonstop to Ho Chi Minh City, and the flight takes about as long as Delhi to Bangkok.

Vietnam also sits only ninety minutes ahead of Indian time, so nobody lands wrecked. You check in, drop your bags and are out in the Old Quarter the same evening. Once you are on the ground the money goes further than most people expect. A week in Vietnam with flights included usually costs well under a comparable week in Europe or Japan, and the difference shows up in the things that make a holiday feel good: a proper hotel room, a private car instead of public transport, a night on a cruise boat among the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay.

There is a seasonal reason too. Delhi’s winter is long, grey and smoky, and a week of warm, clean air feels like a reset. Just be realistic about which part of Vietnam delivers it. Hanoi and Ha Long in December and January are cool and often overcast, typically 12–20°C: lovely for walking and eating, not for swimming. If sunshine is the goal during Delhi’s smog season, go south. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc are warm and mostly dry from about November to April.

Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City first?

If the plan starts with Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh, fly into Hanoi. If it starts with the Mekong Delta or Phu Quoc, fly into Ho Chi Minh City. On anything longer than a week, ask for an open-jaw ticket, in to Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City or the other way round, so you travel in one direction instead of paying for a flight back to where you began. Get it priced both ways before you decide.

Timing and baggage tips for Delhi departures

• Book early for peak dates. For Diwali, Christmas and New Year, buy tickets two to three months out. Otherwise six to eight weeks is usually enough, and Tuesday to Thursday departures tend to be cheaper.
• Respect Delhi’s winter fog. From December into early February, fog can delay flights at Delhi airport. Do not schedule a cruise or any non-refundable activity for Day 1, and keep your last night in Vietnam flexible.
• Read the baggage line. Low-cost fares on IndiGo and VietJet Air often exclude checked bags. Add baggage online when you book; it is cheaper than paying at the airport.
• Plan a gentle Day 1. Arrival times vary by airline, so keep the first evening light and put anything ticketed on Day 2.

Vietnam Visa for Indians: The E-Visa in Six Steps

Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt for Vietnam, so you need a visa before you fly. The e-visa makes it painless. There is no embassy visit and no sponsor letter, and you can do the whole application from your phone in about half an hour.

1. Open the official portalStart a new application on Vietnam’s government e-visa site, evisa.gov.vn. Type the address in yourself rather than clicking an ad; lookalike sites charge service fees on top of the government fee.
2. Upload your documentsYou need a scan of your passport photo page and a recent passport-style photo on a plain background. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
3. Enter your travel detailsGive your intended entry date, your port of entry (Noi Bai in Hanoi or Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City for nonstop flights from Delhi) and the address of your first hotel.
4. Choose entry type and paySingle entry costs USD 25 and multiple entry USD 50, both valid for up to 90 days. Pay by international card and save the registration code that appears.
5. Wait for approvalProcessing is officially about three working days, and the office does not work on Vietnamese public holidays, so apply two to three weeks before you fly. Check status with your registration code.
6. Download, check and printCompare the name, date of birth and passport number on the e-visa with your passport, character by character. Carry two printed copies. Children need their own application.

The official portal is evisa.gov.vn. The e-visa is valid for up to 90 days and is accepted at Hanoi (Noi Bai), Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat) and Da Nang airports, among others.

Vegetarian, Jain and Indian Food in Vietnam

This is the first question we hear from Delhi families, often before dates or budget. The honest answer is that it is easier than its reputation, but it needs a little planning.

Vietnam has a strong Buddhist vegetarian tradition, and the restaurants that follow it carry the word chay on the sign. Look for pho chay (vegetable noodle soup), fresh spring rolls, tofu in tomato sauce, mushroom hotpots and banh mi with tofu or egg. Many of these kitchens avoid onion and garlic by tradition, though it is worth confirming. Indian restaurants operate in Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City, and we book them for dinners on package nights.

The catch is that dishes that look vegetarian often hide fish sauce (nuoc mam), shrimp paste or a meat-based broth. Say it clearly, and keep these phrases on your phone:

Practical Tips Before You Fly From Delhi

Small things that separate a good trip from a smooth one:

• Airport timing: reach Indira Gandhi International about three hours before departure, and add extra time in the fog months.
• Money: rupees cannot be exchanged in Vietnam. Carry some crisp US dollars to change in the city, where counters and banks usually beat airport rates, plus a forex card. At today’s rate ₹500 is about 135,000 dong. Switch on international transactions for your Indian cards before you leave.
• Phone data: an eSIM or a tourist SIM from the airport gives you data for roughly ₹300–₹500. Compare it with your operator’s roaming pack for a short trip.
• Plugs and power: Vietnam runs on 220 V. Round two-pin plugs usually fit, but bring a universal adapter for three-pin Indian chargers.
• Getting around: use the Grab app for cars and bikes, since it shows the fare up front. In Hanoi, cross roads at a steady walking pace and let the scooters flow around you. Never sprint.
• Temples and pagodas: cover shoulders and knees, and carry a light scarf.
• Medicines: carry prescriptions and regular medicines in their original packaging. Pharmacies are easy to find, but brand names differ.
• Tipping: not expected, but appreciated. Around 5–10% at restaurants and ₹300–₹500 a day for a driver or guide.
• What to pack: light layers for the north from October to April, when evenings can fall to 10–15°C, and a rain jacket from May to September.
• Insurance: buy cover that includes medical care and trip cancellation. It costs little next to the trip.

How to Compare Delhi to Vietnam Tour Packages Before You Pay

Two quotes for “Vietnam, 6 nights” can differ by ₹30,000 and still be the same trip on paper. Run these nine checks on every quote you receive, ours included.

1. Per person or per couple? Honeymoon prices are often per couple, family prices per adult. Check the unit before comparing.
2. Are flights in or out? Confirm whether return flights from Delhi, domestic flights inside Vietnam and checked baggage are included.
3. Which cruise, exactly? Ask for the boat name, cabin category and whether it is a day or overnight trip. “Ha Long cruise” can mean anything from a four-hour day boat to a two-night luxury junk.
4. Named hotels. “4-star hotel” is not an answer. You want hotel names, room types and the location.
5. Tickets and transfers. Ba Na Hills cable cars, Trang An boats and cruise transfers are the items most often left out.
6. Meals and diets. Which meals are included, and is your vegetarian or Jain arrangement confirmed in writing?
7. Weather and delay policy. What happens if a cruise is cancelled for weather, or your Delhi flight is delayed by fog? Ask about rebooking and refunds.
8. Taxes. Check whether GST and TCS (tax collected at source on overseas tour packages) are included, and get the final figure in rupees.
