The Short Answer: What Is the Best Vietnam Tours Package?
For most first-time Indian travellers, the best Vietnam tours package is a private 7-day, 6-night route: Hanoi, an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, then Da Nang and Hoi An. It gives you the dramatic north and the easy central coast with just one internal flight. Only 4 or 5 days? Stay in one region. Ten days or more? Add Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong, or Hue and Ninh Binh.
That's the headline, but it comes with fine print. We're the Hanoi-based team behind VietOdyssey Tours, and we regularly untangle itineraries that other people built. A pattern shows up fast: most disappointing trips weren't booked with a bad company. They were booked with a good-looking route that asked too much of the calendar. That's why this guide starts with trip length and transit time instead of a star-rated leaderboard.
Prefer a ranking by traveller type, such as families, honeymooners or trekkers? That lives in our guide to the best Vietnam tour packages by traveller type. This page is about length, logistics and judging a quote before you hand over money.
Key takeaways
- Choose by days first. The same route that shines at 7 days feels rushed at 5.
- Count travel hours, not just destinations. On most days, sightseeing hours should outnumber hours spent in cars, boats and planes.
- Private or shared transport changes the trip more than the hotel's star rating does.
- Autumn favours the north. Central Vietnam, including Hoi An, can be wet and flood-prone from October to November.
- You need a visa. The e-visa is the standard route, with a government fee listed at USD 25 for single entry as of now.
How to Judge Any Vietnam Tours Package: Our 5-Point Test
Every Vietnam tour package looks wonderful in a brochure: limestone islands, lanterns on a river, a bowl of pho at dawn. The differences hide in the parts nobody photographs, like the three-hour drive after a late breakfast, or the "sightseeing" stop that turns out to be a showroom. Here is the test we run on any itinerary, ours included.
- The transit ratio. Add up every hour in a car, boat or plane, and count airport waiting too. On a healthy sightseeing day you should spend more time looking at things than travelling to them. Hanoi to Ha Long Bay alone is roughly two and a half to three hours each way, so "Ha Long and Sapa in one weekend" looks fine on a map and terrible on a clock.
- Who shares your vehicle. A private car with a driver-guide lets you stop for chai, let the kids nap or skip a museum. A seat on a shared coach means the whole group moves at the pace of its slowest bathroom break.
- Named hotels and a named cruise. "4-star hotel or similar" can mean almost anything. Ask for real names and for locations: Old Quarter or outskirts in Hanoi, walking distance to Hoi An's old town or a beach resort twenty minutes away.
- Inclusions written out day by day. Entry tickets, meals, transfers and baggage. Low-cost domestic fares in Vietnam often include cabin baggage only, so find out who pays for checked bags before you land in Da Nang with three suitcases.
- A weather plan B. Ha Long Bay cruises get suspended when storm warnings go out, and the central coast floods in autumn. Ask what happens then (reschedule, refund or swap) and get the answer in writing.
A note from our Hanoi desk: when one quote is far cheaper than two others for the "same" route, run the five points on it first. The saving is usually hiding in a shared coach, an unnamed hotel or a "free" shopping stop.
Best Vietnam Tours Package by Trip Length: 5, 7, 10 and 14 Days
Match the package to your calendar, not the other way round. This is how the routes line up, from a long weekend to a full two weeks.
| Trip length | Route | Internal flights | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4–5 days | Hanoi · Ha Long Bay · Ninh Binh, or Da Nang · Hoi An · Hue | 0 | Long weekends, young kids, a first taste | Squeezing two regions into one short trip |
| 6–7 days | Hanoi · Ha Long Bay · Da Nang · Hoi An | 1 | First-timers, couples, three generations | The long transfer day between the bay and the coast |
| 8–10 days | Add Ninh Binh and Hue, or Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong | 1–2 | Families wanting a gentler pace, repeat visitors | Adding Sapa and the south in the same trip |
| 11–14 days | Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, with Hue, Hoi An, the Mekong and optional Phu Quoc | 2–3 | Senior travellers, sabbaticals, food lovers | Needs an open-jaw flight so you don't backtrack |
One region, done properly
Hanoi → Ha Long Bay → Ninh Binh
Pick the north (October to April) or the central coast (February to May) and stay put. A northern loop of Hanoi, an overnight on Ha Long Bay and a Ninh Binh day trip needs no flights at all. You trade breadth for time at each stop, which is the right trade at this length.
- You get: no flights, one calm pace
- You skip: the other half of the country
Both Vietnams, one flight
Hanoi (2N) → Ha Long cruise (1N) → Da Nang (1N) → Hoi An (2N)
The shortest route that gives you the limestone seascape of the north and the lantern-lit, beach-side calm of the centre. Two long drives, one flight and a slow day in Hoi An to catch your breath.
- You get: the classic first-timer circuit
- You skip: Hue, Ninh Binh, the south
Add depth, not more cities
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long → Hue → Hoi An
There are two good ways to spend extra days. Go deeper in the middle with Ninh Binh and Hue, or head south for Ho Chi Minh City and a Mekong Delta day. Choose one direction, not both.
- You get: imperial history or the Mekong
- You skip: Sapa, which needs its own days
The whole length of the country
Hanoi → Hue → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City → Mekong
Fly into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City (an open-jaw ticket) so you never backtrack, then finish with Phu Quoc if beaches are the reward. Build in one unscheduled day somewhere in the middle. Trust us on that one.
- You get: north, centre and south
- You skip: nothing major, except rest
Two add-ons people always ask about
Sapa. It is beautiful and slow to reach: about five to six hours by road from Hanoi, or an overnight train. Plan at least two extra days, and accept that mist can hide the views. We add it only to trips of eight days or more, or to a north-only itinerary.
Phu Quoc. Indian passport holders can enter Phu Quoc without a visa for up to 30 days, but only by flying directly to the island from abroad and staying on it. The moment you want Hanoi or Hoi An in the same trip, you'll need the regular e-visa, so plan the paperwork around the whole route rather than the island alone.
Local update: after Vietnam's 2025 provincial mergers, Hoi An sits inside Da Nang city, so some booking sites list Hoi An hotels under "Da Nang". The old town is still roughly half an hour by car from central Da Nang, so check the actual address before assuming a hotel is a short walk from the lanterns.
Private or Group: Which Vietnam Tour Package Style Is Better?
This choice changes your trip more than almost any other, and it rarely gets a fair hearing, because the cheaper option is the one that gets advertised. Here is the plain comparison.
Private tour
- You set the start times, so slow mornings are allowed
- Meals are handled one by one: vegetarian, Jain, no-onion-no-garlic, kid-friendly
- Kind to grandparents, with shorter walks, more breaks and a car at the door
- Costs more per person for couples and solo travellers
Small-group tour
- Lower price per person, especially for one or two travellers
- Fixed departure dates make flights easier to plan
- One schedule for everyone, so skipping a stop isn't an option
- Shopping stops and set lunch spots are more common, and dietary requests are harder to honour
Our view: for a family of four or more, private is often close to group pricing per head and far more comfortable. For couples it costs more, but it pays for itself in Hanoi and Hoi An, where the best hours are the unplanned ones. One honest caveat: the Ha Long Bay cruise itself is shared with other guests in either style unless you charter a whole boat.
What Decides the Price of a Vietnam Tours Package
You won't find a "from ₹X" figure on this page. Costs swing too much with season, group size and hotel category for one number to help you, and plenty of tour pages quote a price that only exists on a quiet Tuesday in June. What we can do is show you what moves the price, so you can read any quote critically.
| What changes | How it moves the price | What we'd do |
|---|---|---|
| Travel dates | Diwali week, Christmas to New Year and Tet (early February in 2027) cost the most and sell out first | If you can shift by a week, do; availability changes faster than people expect |
| Cruise category | Standard or premium cabins, and 2-day versus 3-day cruises, make the biggest single swing in a package | Choose the cabin, not the star label on the boat. A balcony matters at sunrise |
| Hotel location | Old Quarter and walkable Hoi An hotels cost more than outskirts equivalents | Pay for location in Hoi An, save on stars in Hanoi |
| Internal flights | Each leg adds fare and possibly checked-bag fees | Keep a 7-day trip to one flight |
| Private vs group | Private costs more for one or two travellers, and is closer to even for four or more | See the comparison above |
| Add-ons | Ba Na Hills, My Son, cooking classes, tailoring and spa sessions stack up | Pick one or two, not all of them |
Where to spend, where to save
- Spend on the cruise cabin (you sleep there), a Hoi An hotel within walking distance of the old town, and a good local guide for Hanoi and Hue where the history needs explaining.
- Save on your Hanoi hotel's star rating (you're out from morning till night), your single night in Da Nang city, and "luxury" airport transfer upgrades.
If you'd like a real number rather than a list of factors, send your dates and group size on WhatsApp and we'll return an itemised quote in INR.
7 Red Flags in a Vietnam Tours Package (Check Before You Pay)
None of these is automatically a deal-breaker on its own. Together, they predict a disappointing trip.
- "Sightseeing as per itinerary" with no list of entry tickets. If you can't see what's included, assume it isn't.
- Hotels described as "4-star or similar". Ask for names. A real operator can give you two or three.
- Four or more cities in six days. That's a transfer schedule with a few photo stops attached.
- "Free" factory visits. Silk, lacquer, jade and coffee showrooms can eat an afternoon. Ask how many shopping stops are planned; the right answer is none.
- "Ha Long cruise" with no boat name or cabin type. Cabin quality varies enormously and it's the part of the trip you'll remember.
- No contact on the ground. You want a named person in Vietnam with a WhatsApp number, not only a sales line back home.
- Pressure to pay everything now, to a personal account. Ask for a proper invoice and a written weather and cancellation policy first.
Best Time to Book a Vietnam Tours Package
Vietnam is long enough to have three separate climates, so check the region your route actually covers rather than "Vietnam" as a whole.
| Region | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa | F | F | B | B | F | F | R | R | F | B | B | B |
| Centre Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An | F | B | B | B | B | F | F | F | R | R | R | F |
| South HCMC, Mekong, Phu Quoc | B | B | B | B | F | F | F | F | F | F | B | B |
B BestF Fine, with some heat or rainR Risky: storms, heavy rain or flooding
March and April are the safest months for the classic Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Hoi An route, because the north is mild and the centre is dry. If your dates fall in October or November, put the north first and treat the central coast with caution: Hoi An's old town sits beside a river and can flood in autumn storms. A good operator keeps a swap plan ready, such as reordering the route or moving the central-coast nights to another region.
How early to book
For Diwali week, Christmas to New Year and Tet, book eight to ten weeks ahead. Overnight cruise cabins and walkable Hoi An hotels go first. In shoulder months, three to four weeks is usually workable.
As of mid-October, Diwali week is under four weeks away, so expect a thin choice of cruise cabins. Christmas to New Year is the window to lock in now, before the better rooms are gone.
Vietnam Visa and Flights for Indians: What Changed
Two things have shifted in our favour, and one still catches people out. As of mid-October, this is the picture. Rules, fees and schedules change, so confirm each item with the official source in the week you apply or book.
- Visa still required. Indian passport holders need a visa for mainland Vietnam. The e-visa is the standard route: valid for up to 90 days, with a government fee listed at USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entry. Your passport needs at least six months' validity. Apply only on the official government portal, as the fee isn't refunded if an application is rejected.
- Phu Quoc exception. The 30-day visa-free entry applies only if you fly directly to the island from abroad and stay there (see the note above).
- More nonstop flights. Several Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, now have direct service to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Kolkata to Hanoi takes roughly three hours and Delhi to Hanoi about four and a half. Mumbai to Hanoi nonstops started this autumn, with IndiGo's daily service due from 25 October.
- Open-jaw tickets. Flying into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City (or the reverse) saves a full day of backtracking on any trip longer than a week.
Our Best Vietnam Tours Package for 7 Days, Day by Day
Here is the default route from the table above, with the travel time written next to each day. This is the part most itineraries leave out, and it's the quickest way to see whether a plan is realistic.
| Day | Plan | Travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive in Hanoi and transfer to your Old Quarter hotel. Stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake and have an easy dinner. | About 1 hr |
| Day 2 | Full day in Hanoi: Temple of Literature, an Old Quarter food walk and an evening water puppet show. | About 1 hr local |
| Day 3 | Drive to Ha Long Bay, board your cruise by noon, kayak among the islets and watch sunset from the deck. | 2.5–3 hrs by road |
| Day 4 | Sunrise on deck, brunch, disembark, then drive back to Hanoi and take an evening flight to Da Nang. This is the longest day, so we book the later flight. | 3 hrs road + 1.5 hrs flight |
| Day 5 | Da Nang beach morning and Marble Mountains (or Ba Na Hills), then move on to Hoi An for the evening. | About 1 hr |
| Day 6 | Free day in Hoi An: old town on foot, a cooking class or basket-boat ride, lanterns at night. Optional early trip to My Son. | 0–2 hrs |
| Day 7 | Transfer to Da Nang airport for your flight home or onward. | About 45 min |
If history matters more to you than beaches, swap the Da Nang night for Hue and add a day. If you'd rather skip the Day 4 scramble, add a second night on the bay or in Hanoi. Both changes are routine for our planners and don't mean starting the quote again.
How to Compare Three Vietnam Tour Package Quotes in 20 Minutes
Once you have two or three quotes, this routine will tell you which one is genuinely the best Vietnam tours package for your trip, and it takes about twenty minutes.
- Fix one brief and send it to everyone. Write down your dates, number of days, who is travelling (with ages), food needs and preferred pace. Send the identical brief to all three operators, because quotes built from different briefs can't be compared.
- Make each quote name names. Ask for the actual hotels, the cruise name and cabin category, the domestic airline, and the language your guide speaks. Anything described as 'or similar' gets a follow-up question.
- Line the quotes up in a simple sheet. Put the quotes in columns and these rows down the side: hotels, cruise, private or shared transport, meals, entry tickets, airport transfers, domestic flights, checked baggage and extras. Blank cells are your answer.
- Check who is actually on the ground. Ask for the operator's international travel business licence number and confirm the guide holds a tour guide card. You also want a named person with a WhatsApp number in Vietnam, not just a sales line back home.
- Break ties with transit hours, not price. If two quotes look equal, pick the route with fewer hours in cars, boats and planes. A slightly higher price for a calmer trip is usually the better buy.
Happy to be one of the three. Send us your brief on WhatsApp and we'll answer the same five questions about our own route, including the ones that don't flatter us.
Vietnam Tours Package FAQs
What is the best Vietnam tours package for 7 days?
A private 7-day route from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay (one night on a cruise) and on to Da Nang and Hoi An is the one we would book first. It needs only one internal flight, keeps transit under control and leaves a slow day in Hoi An. Swap Da Nang for Hue if history matters more to you than beaches.
Is a Vietnam tours package better than booking everything myself?
Self-booking works if you enjoy planning and your dates are flexible. A package earns its keep on logistics: cruise cabins, domestic flights and transfers are matched to each other, you get one number to call on the ground, and weather changes are handled for you. It suits first trips, families and anyone short on planning time.
How much should I budget for a Vietnam tour package from India?
Think in three layers: the land package (hotels, transfers, guide, entry tickets), your flights from India, and the visa plus personal spending. The land package moves most with season, hotel location and private versus group travel. Send us your dates and group size and we will return an itemised INR quote with the layers kept separate.
Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes, for mainland Vietnam. Most travellers use the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, with a government fee listed at USD 25 for single entry as of now. You need a passport valid for at least six months. Phu Quoc has a limited 30-day visa-free entry for Indians with strict conditions. Always confirm the current rules on the official immigration portal.
Is the overnight Ha Long Bay cruise worth it?
For most people, yes. The best hours on the bay are sunset and early morning, when the day boats have gone. A day trip from Hanoi spends five to six hours on the road for a few hours afloat. Choose the cabin category carefully, because it matters more than the star label on the boat.
Can I get Indian, vegetarian or Jain meals on a Vietnam tour?
Usually yes, with notice. Vietnamese cooking leans on fish sauce and meat broths, so mention your needs at booking and again two days before arrival. Cruises and partner restaurants can prepare vegetarian meals, strict Jain meals need advance arrangement, and Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City all have Indian restaurants.
What is the best month to book a Vietnam tours package?
For a route covering Hanoi and Hoi An, March and April are the safest months, with a mild north and a dry central coast. October to December suits the north and south, while February to May suits the centre. Avoid putting Hoi An nights in the October to November storm window.
How early should I book a Vietnam tour package?
Eight to ten weeks ahead for peak windows such as Diwali week, Christmas to New Year and Tet. Three to four weeks is usually workable in shoulder months. Apply for your e-visa once flights are fixed; approvals normally take a few working days, but leave a buffer.
